The 10R is the rebirth of Sena’s SMH10R, and in hand with a big jump up to Bluetooth version 4.1, Sena threw in a handful of cool improvements that make the new Sena ‘R’ an impressive update.

The 10R forgoes Sena’s famous control wheel in favor of push-button controls. It’s not quite the walk in the park that the Jog-Dial is, but it’s still an easy system to master and operate with a gloved hand. The button controls also mean the 10R is only slightly thicker than a quarter. Amazingly, with the exception of a shorter range on the intercom, the diminutive R offers the same features and sound quality as its full-sized counterpart, the 10S.

Features carried over from the previous edition of the ‘R’ model, the SMH10R, include 4-way intercom conferencing, Bluetooth connectivity with your smartphone, GPS, or music player, and hands-free phone operation. New highlights on the 10R include an FM tuner, longer battery life (from 8 to 10 hours of run time), Advanced Noise Control, and better speakers. In fact, the 10R uses the same speakers as Sena’s top-of-the-line 20S.

Bluetooth Version 4.1

Bluetooth version 4.1 delivers more reliable, clearer, and more energy-efficient streaming, so the whole 10R experience is smoother and crisper than the previous Sena generation running on Bluetooth 3.0.

Universal Pairing

The newest Sena units, including the 10R, 10S, 20S, and 10U, can pair with other brands of Bluetooth headsets. This means you can still communicate with members of your riding group even if their Bluetooth system isn’t Sena brand.

Sena Handlebar Remote

For an extra $60, you can buy the edition of the 10R that includes the Sena Handlebar Remote. The Handlebar Remote is $100 when sold as a separate accessory. It snaps right around your grips, and with it, you can easily and conveniently control your headset entirely from your cockpit.

The Handlebar Remote is compatible with other Sena units.

Sena 10U

The 10R control unit sits nearly flat against the side of your helmet, and the battery pack for it affixes to the back of your helmet. If you want a Bluetooth unit that is completely contained within your helmet, take a look at the Sena 10U, available for Arai full-face helmets, the Schuberth C3 Pro and C3, Shoei GT-Air, and Shoei Neotec.
