Description

The Sena 10C is the newest action camera on the scene, but it’s also a fully-functional Sena intercom unit. That makes it the first of its kind–intercom AND camera in one, so you can record audio while filming, record mixed audio with your friends while using the intercom function, even narrate your film over streaming music. But the biggest surprise is that it isn’t even as expensive as you would think. At $350, the 10C, with all the capability it offers, is a bargain.

The Camera

The 10C camera delivers 1080p at 30 frames-per-second (fps) or 720p at 30 and 60 fps. That’s not quite as good as the comparable GoPro’s 1080p@60fps, but still enough to deliver great videos of your trail runs, scenic rides, and “Whoa!”-moments on the highway. 3.5 megapixel images can be captured manually or using the timelapse or burst modes.

A useful feature on the 10C is Video Tagging mode, which records and deletes continuously unless prompted by you to preserve a segment. You can ‘tag’ and store exciting moments on your ride, instead of searching through hours of recorded material later on for a few minutes you want to save.

A note on the battery: Yes, the 10C’s battery has enough juice for 17 hours of talk time! That big battery facilitates the energy-sucking camera mode, of course, which can record for two hours. The nice thing about the 10C is that it let’s you know when you’re at 20% battery life and actually shuts off the camera, so you can stop recording with enough power left to use the intercom on your way home.

The Intercom

Looking at the 10C as a Bluetooth headset, it lies somewhere between the Sena SMH10 and the top-of-the-line Sena, the 20S. Like the 20S, the 10C runs on the latest, most efficient version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth Version 4.0 (the 10C operates on v. 4.1), so transmissions are clearer, faster, and more reliable. It’s missing just a few of the new features introduced with the 20S, but its one-mile intercom range, FM-radio mode, and 17-hour talk time take it a few steps ahead of Sena’s former top dog, the SMH10. Of course, the 10C allows you to stream music or GPS directions, talk on the phone, and intercom with other riders as you would with any headset system of this caliber.

The Bottom Line

As I mentioned in the beginning, the 10C is the first unit to offer both camera and intercom functions in one. Though Sena’s action cameras aren’t up to the level of GoPro quite yet, the 10C still does video really, really well, and it goes without saying that the intercom portion of the unit is top notch.

To get the audio-recording functionality of the 10C from a GoPro, you would need to have a Sena intercom and the Sena Bluetooth Audio Pack accessory ($129.00), which links your camera to the headset. Alternatively, the Sena Prism camera ($399.00) has Bluetooth audio recording built in, and can pair with most Bluetooth intercoms on the market. Or just choose the Sena 10C; at $350, it’s an easy-to-use, inexpensive all-in-one solution for capturing all those stunning and hair-raising moments on the road.

Gizmag called the 10C “the best gadget in the Sena range”; click here to read their complete 10C review.
