Pinlock Fog-Resitant Helmet Shields

Posted on: January 19th, 2014 by Road Rider MCA

The Pinlock Fog-Resistant System is a simple and extremely effective fog solution widely available for Arai, Shoei, and HJC helmets, and select helmets made by other manufacturers. The Pinlock system is made up of only two plastic parts – a shield and a thin shield insert – neither of which are treated with a chemical anti-fog coating that can wear off over time. As such, a one-time purchase of a Pinlock system can easily last the lifetime of your helmet, or as long as a helmet shield can reasonably stay scratch free. Leading helmet manufacturers are now including a Pinlock system with many of their helmets, and it is a testament to the universally recognized advantage of the design.

The way the Pinlock system works is simple. A Pinlock shield has two small, plastic posts facing inward on each side of the shield. These posts, or ‘pins’, are perfectly placed to tightly seat the Pinlock insert. The insert is sold separately or may come with your new Pinlock-prepped helmet, and is made of a flexible, porous plastic. This insert is moisture absorbent and has a very thin silicone seal around the edge which creates a tiny airtight gap between the shield and insert. Like a double-paned window, this airtight gap provides a layer of insulation and works together with the insert material to completely eliminate condensation buildup.
