Metzeler ME 888 Marathon Ultra

Metzeler has one-upped the ME 880 Marathon with the new-for-2013 ME 888 Marathon Ultra. Metzeler’s “Triple Eight” delivers longer lasting performance, and is called by Metzeler marketing director Christopher Wall “the only ultra mileage V-Twin tire with Metzeler performance and handling”.

Thanks to a redesigned tread pattern and deeper tread depth, the Triple Eight handles better in wet weather and retains an outstanding level of stability and smoothness at high and low speeds, even over the course of a significantly longer mileage life.

  1. I have a 2003 Honda VTX1800Retro with these size tires:
    front 150/80R17
    rear 180/70R16

I have been using Dunlop Elite III on Hwy 17 and the front tire needs to be replaced every year (about 4000 miles) and the back tire every other year. Maybe there is another tire I should try.

Thanks for the comment. You are right to look to Metzeler for another good option for your bike. Unfortunately, the ME888 is not made in your sizes but the ME880 is, which is also a fantastic tire. But the Elite 3 is an excellent choice as well, and I really don’t think the 880s would get much better mileage than the Dunlops. I suspect the reason for the low mileage and uneven wear your finding with the Elites is due to high speed cornering and braking on a relatively heavy motorcycle. A “fun” commute on Highway 17 will tear up tires, period. And you might just be having too much fun out there :-) But if you’d like, please give us a call (408-227-6936) and ask to talk to Phil, our Tire Manager, or to one of our excellent tire gurus in the Tire Department. They’d be happy to lay out all your options and maybe give you some other hints as to what might be going on there. Best of luck!
