Airframe Statistic

Icon’s newest Airframe, the Statistic, isn’t just another graphic from Icon. When compared to all the other limited edition graphics that pour out of Icon’s Portland headquarters–sometimes funny or daring, always artistic and striking–the Statistic is a handsome homage to Icon’s more serious side. Icon is committed to rider safety and, as we’ve been told by Icon leadership, that’s why they won’t make half helmets or three-quarter helmets.

The percentages shown on the Statistic illustrate where the most common impacts occur on the head during motorcycle accident scenarios. As you can see, over 50% of those impacts occur below the half helmet hemisphere, and a good percentage occur on and around the chin area. These statistics are taken from the famous Hurt Report on motorcycle safety, which found that wearing a full-face helmet is the single most effective way to reduce the likelihood of injury or death in a motorcycle collision. (We’ve talked about the Hurt Report’s findings before in relation to high-visibility clothing in our post “See Me Now? The Hi-Viz Difference”.) Since its release, the Statistic has been inspiring discussion, stirring things up, and making us all think a little bit more about the importance of choosing our headgear gravely. But of course, as Icon reminds us, there’s no reason not to have fun and look good at the same time.

Icon Airframe Helmet

The Airframe is Icon’s top-of-the-line helmet featuring an advanced tri-composite shell and a unique ventilation system that gave the Airframe its name.

The Airframe’s namesake ventilation system is designed to provide optimal airflow regardless of how fast you’re travelling. The Airframe features large, angled intake ports that force air directly onto the head and through the helmet. The special design of the intake vents allows air to penetrate easily at all times, even without the windforce generated by high speeds. When riding in an Airframe, your head will stay cool even when you’re stuck in slow moving urban traffic.

The composite shell is what takes the Airframe above and beyond the Icon Airmada and Alliance helmets. It incorporates fiberglass for sturdiness and impact resistance, Dyneema for abrasion resistance, and carbon fiber for strength, impact deflection, and impact distribution. The Airframe is also Icon’s lightest shell – weighing in at about 3.7 pounds for the standard Airframe in size medium. The Airframe Carbon edition is lighter still, and at about 3.2 pounds for a size medium it weighs approximately the same as Bell’s first-rate track helmet, the Star Carbon.
