What’s Covec?

Technical yarns like Kevlar and Dyneema are commonly found in motorcycle clothing because of their high resistance to abrasion. ABRASION RESISTANCE and CUT RESISTANCE

Covec has three times the cut resistance as aramid (Kevlar) and UHMWPE (Dyneema, Nome) fabrics.*

Covec, Kevlar, and Dyneema are all extremely abrasion resistant, so they can withstand a lot of abrasion in a slide before ripping. Covec is more abrasion resistant than aramid’s like Kevlar. UHMWPEs like Dyneema offer the highest abrasion resistance of the group, but they also come with a serious downside, as you’ll see in our next section:

PROTECTION AGAINST BURNS

Burns are extremely common effects of motorcycle accidents, and there are two primary causes: contact with hot engine parts; and friction burns during a slide. A material that transfers heat readily won’t protect your skin during either scenario, and such materials can increase the severity of injury by melting onto the skin. UHMWPEs have extremely low melting points–a serious weakness in the face of friction. Covec has a very high melting point.

LASTING DURABILITY

Covec is further set apart from the group by its ability to maintain its protective integrity after the repeated washings, wearings, and beatings you put your #1 pair of jeans through.

Covec has a high flex fatigue, meaning it withstands repeated folding and bending; and low yarn-on-yarn abrasion, which is the tendency of individual yarns of the fabric to rub against each other and break. Aramids have particularly low flex fatigue, high instance of yarn-on-yarn breakage, and succumb to the effects of hydrolysis over time by washing. Aramids are also less resistant than Covec to alkalis and acids like sweat, detergent, motor oil, and other commonly occurring substances.
