Video Of The Week: Chennai To Pondicherry
In this week’s Video Of The Week we travel to India. The journey is a short but memorable one–from Chennai to Pondicherry, along beautiful roads and through the busy towns that dot them, winding down the south-eastern coast of India.
The bikes are Royal Enfields, and the narration is from Robert Pirsig’s brilliant classic Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance. The match seems fitting, for if there is a nation on Earth that has the spirit of motorcycling in its bones it might be India. Not speaking of the kind that wins trophies and breaks speed records, necessarily, but the kind that is fundamental, and rooted in the culture and being of its people. And thanks to the country’s lasting appreciation for the historic brand, and to a production plant in Tamil Nadu, Royal Enfield continues today to be the world’s oldest motorcycle company still in production.
As the filmmakers admit in the YouTube notes, it isn’t easy to convey in a short film all the sights, sounds, and smells of that special place that seems both frenetic and tranquil at the same time. Nevertheless, they come as close as may be possible in the thoughtful short film you can watch below.
