Race Tracks and Track Days Of Northern California

BY Road Rider MCA - August 22nd, 2015

There’s a reason why many of America’s best racing dynasties call California home–it’s the race tracks (and maybe something in the water). We have a selection of some of the best road racing venues in the nation within just a few hours from the Bay Area, so if RPMs are what get you going, you can participate in track days, amateur racing, and experience pro racing from the grandstands all year long.

Race Tracks

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

1021 Monterey Salinas Hwy, Salinas, CA 93908 MAP
(831) 242-8201

Distance From Road Rider: ~70 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

Track Length: 2.2 miles

Notes: Laguna Seca has a 90 dB limit which is strictly enforced. Stock pipes or quiet inserts are required by all bikes. On a happier note, CORKSCREW!

Thunderhill Raceway Park

5250 California 162, Willows, CA 95988 MAP
(530) 934-5588

Distance From Road Rider: ~182 miles/3 hours

Track Length: 2-, 3-, and 5-mile courses

Notes: The 2015 Thunderhill West expansion gave Thunderhill the longest course in the country, and 2 more miles of exciting turns and varied terrain. Track days are available at T-Hill in 3 configurations: T-Hill West (the new, 2-mile course), East (the original 3 miler), and the full five miles of Thunderhill.

Sonoma Raceway

29355 Arnold Dr, Sonoma, CA 95476 MAP
(707) 938-8448

Distance From Road Rider: ~85 miles/1 hour 40 mins

Track Length: 2.5 miles

Notes: A beautiful, flowy track and nice facilities make Sonoma many riders’ top choice.

Buttonwillow Raceway Park

24551 Lerdo Hwy, Buttonwillow, CA 93206 MAP
(661) 764-5333

Distance From Road Rider: ~210 miles/3 hours

Track Length: 1-, 2-, and 3-mile courses

Notes: Loved by many riders willing to make the trek from the Bay Area, Buttonwillow is known to be an extremely fun track to ride. Since its infamous bumpy surface was re-done in 2014, there’s no reason to stay away.

Track Days and Track Day Providers

If you’re interested in becoming involved in racing, having some fast fun in a safe environment, or even just improving your skills on the road, signing up for a track day is the best way to get your bike onto a race track.

It isn’t as hard as you may think to get yourself and your bike ready, and even if you only ever do one track day, your street riding will benefit from the skills you’ll learn with the help of the instructors. Track riding is split into groups based on experience level, so you can ride and progress at a pace you’re comfortable with. Visit any of the websites below for track day dates and more information on how to prep your bike and your body.

The following fantastic track day providers operate track days at Sonoma, Thunderhill, Laguna Seca, and Buttonwillow throughout the year (~March-November):
