Marquez Takes First Place at Laguna

Marc Marquez took the top spot on the podium yesterday aboard his Honda at the Red Bull US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, followed by LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl in second place. Valentino Rossi took third place for Yamaha.

Marquez’s win marks the first time a MotoGP rookie has won a championship race at Laguna. With a first place win in April at the brand new Circuit of the America’s track in Austin under his belt and Indianapolis coming up next month, Marquez has an opportunity to be the first to win a US GP ‘Triple Crown’.

Marquez went off the track to pass Rossi inside in the middle of the Corkscrew early on in the race. It was a bold move that mimicked the one Rossi pulled off in 2008 when he made a shocking pass on Casey Stoner for the win. Glad to be making podium appearances again with Yamaha, Rossi was pleased with his 3rd place finish. He later said of Marquez,  “He has all the potential to be the greatest of all time, better than me.”

Stefan Bradl’s fantastic second place finish was a surprise to many, but his ascent has been rapid since he came up from Moto2 and was named MotoGP Rookie of the Year last year. He had the fastest qualifying lap this weekend and held the lead for the majority of the race, but was passed by Marquez with 13 laps to go.
