Lake Hovsgol National Park

Mongolians call it “Mother Sea” – Lake Hovsgol is over 2 million years old and remains one of the most pristine of only 17 ancient lakes in the entire world. It holds over three-times the water volume of Lake Tahoe and is nearly six times its size; it contains 70% of all the freshwater in Mongolia and is the headwaters source for Lake Baikal, which contains 20% of the world’s freshwater. The lake is part of the 2.5-million acre Lake Hovsgol National Park, established by the Mongolian government in 1992 to preserve the beautiful and critical area. Yet the lake and surrounding wilderness face continuing threats from poachers and many daily visitors (often in the thousands per day) who use, and sometimes abuse, the park. The park’s 2.5 million acres are protected by 15 full-time rangers with extremely limited resources. The rangers patrol thousands of miles on horseback, in four-wheel drive vehicles, and sometimes on dilapidated motorcycles. Though extremely dedicated, their numbers are few and the rangers are ill-equipped to effectively pursue criminals and patrol their land.

Blue Waves Campaign Motorcycle Rally

The Blue Waves Campaign believes preserving Lake Hovsgol National Park is not just the responsibility of Mongolians, but of the whole world. In that spirit, Blue Waves is partnering with an international group of volunteers who are raising funds for the purchase of motorcycles and gear, and will ride the new bikes nearly 2000 miles from Ulan Baator into the National Park and deliver them to the park rangers. The rangers will then receive two days of training on their new bikes (think Kawasaki KLX250).

Donate

If you can’t make the Yosemite ride or would like to help more, donations can be submitted through BlueWavesMongolia.Org or through Cheri Brugman’s Indiegogo crowdfunding donation page. Cheri lives in San Francisco and is helping to organize and raise funds for the motorcycles and gear. She will be part of the vehicle support crew for the ride from Ulan Baator to Lake Hovsgol. Like the rest of the volunteers, she will be paying her own way to Mongolia. The funds raised from her Indiegogo page will go to purchasing one motorcycle, accompanying gear, and the shipping costs to Mongolia. Click here to visit Cheri Brugman’s Indiegogo.com page.
